High manganese steel, comparison of titanium carbide and tungsten carbide materials: How to choose the material of the wear-resistant parts of the crusher?
In the wear-resistant parts of the crusher, the choice of material directly determines the service life, replacement cost and equipment operating efficiency of the parts. Among the common wear-resistant materials on the market, high manganese steel, titanium carbide (TiC) and tungsten carbide (WC) are three representative choices. Today, we will make a comparison for everyone from the three dimensions of performance, application place and cost performance.
- Typical composition: Mn 17-19%, Cr 1.5-2.5%
- Core advantages: extremely high impact toughness and “work hardening” characteristics. After being subjected to strong impact, the surface hardness increases rapidly while maintaining the toughness.
- Applicable places: High impact + medium wear conditions such as jaw plate of jaw crusher, bowl liner and mantle of cone crusher, wear-resistant parts of rotary crusher, etc.
- Features: Cost-effective, strong impact resistance, and not easy to break. It is currently the most widely used material for wear-resistant parts of crushers.
- The hardness is extremely high, the density is relatively low, and it has good high temperature stability and oxidation resistance.
- Usually in the form of composite materials or coatings, the wear resistance is better than that of high manganese steel, and at the same time it is lighter than tungsten carbide (WC).
- Applicable Places: Working conditions with high wear-resistant requirements and relatively small impact, or used as reinforcing material.
- Features: Excellent wear resistance, good high temperature resistance and oxidation resistance, but weaker toughness and impact resistance than high manganese steel.
- The hardness is extremely high, and the wear resistance is the most prominent among the three materials.
- It is often used in the form of cemented carbide inserts, surfacing layers or integral cemented carbide.
- Applicable places: Parts with severe wear of pure abrasives and small impact loads, such as some fine crushing equipment or high-wear areas.
- Features: The wear resistance is top-notch, but the brittleness is large, the impact resistance is weak, and the cost is relatively high.
How to Choose a More Suitable Material?
- High impact, more larger material, jaw crusher/cone crusher main wear-resistant parts → Mn18Cr2 is more suitable. It can continue to harden in the impact, while maintaining no fragmentation, and the comprehensive use cost is the lowest.
- Areas with particularly severe wear and relatively small impact → Titanium carbide can be considered for local strengthening to improve the life of key parts.
- The pursuit of extreme wear resistance and sufficient budget → Tungsten carbide inserts or surfacing solutions are more suitable, but care should be taken to avoid chipping caused by strong impact conditions.
In actual choose the material, it is necessary to combine the hardness of the material, the particle size of the feed, the equipment model, the operating system and other factors to make a comprehensive judgment. Blindly pursuing the “hardest” is often not necessarily the most economical.
We insist that “the right material is the best material” to help customers find the best balance between life and cost.
